The Guild of Straw Craftsmen - Strawfest2017

Weekend details

The weekend starts on Friday afternoon and finishes on Sunday afternoon (after tea). The cost of Strawfest2017 will be no more than £200.00 per person, includes all meals and accommodation. The materials you need will be provided.

Workshops, talks and activities will be on the theme ‘Good as Gold’. Sometimes this will refer to the subject matter, sometimes there will be connections to other traditional crafts and natural materials. The Peak District is a beautiful area and we hope it will inspire us all.

The programme is still being developed so keep up to date here on the website and on Twitter.

We are currently arranging workshops. One of our most experienced tutors, Elaine Lindsay from Scotland will be teaching you how to create small items of plaited straw work. If you are a newcomer to straw work we shall be happy to introduce you to the basics and set you on the way to what may prove a very enjoyable new hobby. If there is an aspect of straw-work you have never tried, like spinning straw threads, this is a great chance to have a go with help at hand.

There will be mini projects available to fill in any spare time and if you have an ongoing project which you never have time for at home, why not bring it with you and enjoy company while you get on with it.

This years guest speaker will be our President, Peter Shelley who will talk about the golden opportunities straw has given him.

Other activities will include a sales table for you to pick up bargains and a favour exchange.

As with other years the Guild of Straw Craftsmen Annual General Meeting will take place on the Sunday morning.

More

The centre we are using is in a really beautiful area of Britain. We want to celebrate its traditions, crafts and scenery. You might even want to extend your stay so that you can get out and see more of this part of Derbyshire. Although it will not be possible to stay on Sunday night there should be rooms available on Thursday if you want to make a long weekend of it . It's a good time of the year to do a bit of sightseeing. We intend to tempt you with details of what the area has to offer. With Crich Tramway village, Denby Pottery, Derwent Valley Mills, Chatsworth, Hardwick Hall and Bolsover Castle and many other stately homes in the area before we even think of the whole Peak District National Park , all within easy reach.

We hope that you will be able to spend the whole weekend at the Strawfest but we understand that this may not be possible. If you can only spare a day get in touch with us and we will see what arrangements we can make.
